TaiKang Terrace Café

Taikang Terrace, a recent offshoot of Shanghai’s iconic shopping area Tianzifang, is a four story refurbished former factory building dating back to 1951. This café is located on the first floor of this 2,800 square meter loft-style boutique shopping compound which currently houses eleven other stores and restaurants.

The café is located in a long space which is glazed from floor to ceiling along one side, allowing patrons to watch shoppers passing by outside. The counter is designed to put the coffee making process on display and to establish an efficient layout of equipment. The counter and surrounding shelving are composed of undulating fins of black painted laser cut metal which continue along the back wall, articulating several small rounded surfaces. The seating area, which has a wooden floor reclaimed from a Shanghai pier, is filled with simple wooden tables and chairs which juxtapose the metal and create a warm and relaxed atmosphere.
